Certified Professional Coder - Remote
The Certified Professional Coder is responsible for ensuring that claims reflect accurate diagnosis as ordered by the health care provider. The Certified Professional Coder validates that the coding methodology correctly reflects how the tests was performed and meets all state, federal, local and payer guidance.
Essential Functions
- Abstract relevant clinical and demographic information from the medical record to assign current ICD and CPT codes in accordance with coding and reimbursement guidelines
- Identify principal and secondary diagnosis with minimal error
- Codes narratives that are a one to one match and identifies situations that do not meet the highest level of specificity
- Request diagnosis from physicians when information is not recorded
- Assists in pre and post payment audits to perform comprehensive review to assure presence of appropriate documentation
- Researches new CPT/HCPCS codes as well as ICD 10 changes, deletions or additions to ensure proper coding on claims
- May be assigned to research for denied claims
- Maintains and updates certification as a professional certified coder
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- 1+ years of experience in coding in a health care environment
- High diploma or equivalent required
- Professional Certification as Coder from a recognized professional organization
- Knowledge of CPT codes, medical terminology, insurance plans, ICD 10 codes
- Must have comprehensive knowledge of medical diagnostic and procedural terminology required
- Understands disease process, anatomy and physiology necessary for assigning accurate numeric and alpha-numeric codes
Preferred
- 1+ years of experience in a clinical laboratory preferred, especially genetic billing
