Looking for a senior/staff+ frontend role focused on architecture, performance, or accessibility. I value strong DX, thoughtful systems, and teams that care about quality. Prefer remote-first or EU-based roles, but open to U.S. opportunities with O-1 visa support, for which I am eligible.
Den Odell
@denodell
Frontend architect & author. Built UIs for millions. Wrote the books that teach others. Remote ideal.
What I'm looking for
I build frontend systems that work at serious scale. Currently at Canva, where our React/TypeScript codebase serves 250+ million monthly users across 190 countries. My current focus includes AI-powered features, shipping generative tools while maintaining the performance standards our users expect.
Before this, I spent nine years at Volvo Cars architecting the Offer Selector and Car Configurator, the e-commerce platforms that power online vehicle purchases across 70+ markets. I built the Offer Selector from scratch as the sole frontend engineer, then grew and led the team as it expanded. Earlier, I spent 13 years at AKQA, rising to Global Head of Web Development, leading frontend teams on projects for Nike, MINI, and Nokia, and founding TECH.insight, a global developer event series focused on software engineering best practices.
I've written two technical books on JavaScript development, published by Apress. They've been cited in 80+ academic papers and are taught at universities worldwide. I also write essays at denodell.com. One recent post on the HTML <output> element reached #1 on Hacker News, has been read by over 125,000 devs, and led to pull requests in major open source projects.
I have been fortunate to have my writing shared by leaders across the web community, including John Allsopp, Josh W. Comeau, Chris Coyier, Jeremy Keith, and Jeffrey Zeldman.
What I care about: performance that users actually feel, accessibility that isn't an afterthought, and frontend architecture that scales without becoming a maintenance nightmare.
