Role Overview
[$COMPANY_NAME] is seeking an experienced Creative Director (Web Design) to lead the strategic vision, design execution, and cross-functional delivery of our web presence. This senior role combines creative leadership, product design discipline, and web engineering fluency to evolve brand experience, increase conversion, and improve digital performance across desktop and mobile. You will own design strategy, design systems, and the creative delivery pipeline while mentoring designers and partnering closely with product, engineering, marketing, and analytics teams.
Responsibilities
- Define and own the web creative strategy and roadmap, aligning brand, UX, and business outcomes (engagement, conversion, retention, SEO)
- Lead and scale a multidisciplinary web design team: manage performance, hire senior designers, set OKRs, and run design reviews and career development
- Architect and evolve a robust design system and component library to ensure visual consistency, accessibility, and engineering efficiency
- Translate business requirements and analytics insights into high-fidelity interaction and visual designs, responsive prototypes, and annotated specs for engineering
- Partner with front-end engineering leads to operationalize designs: optimize asset workflows, front-end components (React/Vue), CSS architectures (BEM, CSS-in-JS), and performance budgets
- Drive UX research and data-informed design: synthesize quantitative analytics (GA4, Core Web Vitals) and qualitative research into prioritized product experiments and A/B tests
- Oversee content strategy and information architecture for SEO, content discoverability, and metadata implementation in headless/monolithic CMS environments
- Ensure web accessibility and compliance (WCAG 2.1 AA), including accessibility testing, remediation plans, and accessible component patterns
- Own production quality: set standards for visual design, motion, copy alignment, and device testing; approve final releases and creative assets
- Represent design in executive discussions, present design trade-offs, and document architecture decisions and design rationale
Required and Preferred Qualifications
Required:
- 10+ years of experience in digital design with 4+ years in a leadership role owning web design or creative teams
- Proven portfolio demonstrating end-to-end web projects: responsive design, enterprise-scale sites, e-commerce, or large product platforms
- Deep expertise in design systems, component-driven design, and cross-platform brand implementation
- Practical knowledge of front-end technologies: HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript fundamentals, and familiarity with frameworks such as React or Vue
- Experience partnering with engineering teams to translate design into production, including CI/CD, performance optimization, and testing workflows
- Strong understanding of SEO best practices, web performance (Lighthouse, Core Web Vitals), and analytics (GA4, Mixpanel)
- Demonstrated experience implementing accessible design patterns to meet WCAG 2.1 AA standards
- Outstanding communication and stakeholder management skills: able to present to executives and influence cross-functional roadmaps
Preferred:
- Experience with headless CMS architectures (Contentful, Sanity, Strapi) and e-commerce platforms (Shopify, CommerceTools)
- Familiarity with motion design for web and prototyping tools supporting advanced interactions
- Hands-on experience with A/B testing platforms (Optimizely, VWO) and experimentation design
- Background in brand strategy and campaign creative for product launches
- Certifications in UX, accessibility, or product management considered a plus
Technical Skills and Relevant Technologies
- Design tools: Figma (expert), Sketch, Adobe Creative Cloud, Principle/After Effects for motion prototypes
- Design systems: Storybook, Lerna, or mono-repo component libraries; token management and theming
- Front-end familiarity: HTML/CSS, SASS/LESS, CSS-in-JS, JavaScript/ES6+, React or equivalent
- Performance & analytics: Lighthouse, WebPageTest, Core Web Vitals, GA4, Mixpanel
- CMS & integration: Headless CMS (Contentful, Sanity), traditional CMS (WordPress), CDN and caching strategies
- Accessibility tooling: axe, WAVE, screen reader testing, automated accessibility audits
- Collaboration & delivery: Git, JIRA, Confluence, CI/CD exposure, design handoff tools (Zeplin, Figma Inspect)
