The Project Engineer is responsible for planning, coordinating, and delivering the successful deployment of rail gate hardware systems across stations and networks. This role oversees the end-to-end lifecycle of hardware installation and upgrades, ensuring compliance with safety standards, operational requirements, and stakeholder expectations. The manager will work closely with engineering, project management, suppliers, and client representatives to ensure deployments are on time, within budget, and fully operational.
Requirements
- Lead and manage the deployment of rail gate hardware across stations and networks.
- Develop and maintain deployment plans, schedules, and resource forecasts.
- Coordinate logistics for hardware delivery, storage, and staging.
- Oversee installation, integration, and commissioning of equipment.
- Ensure all deployments comply with rail safety standards, regulations, and quality procedures.
- Manage on-site contractors, ensuring work is completed to specification and on time.
- Conduct risk assessments and implement mitigation strategies.
- Act as the main point of contact between clients, suppliers, and internal teams.
- Monitor deployment progress, track issues, and escalate where necessary.
- Oversee acceptance testing, handover, and transition to operational support teams.
- Maintain accurate documentation of deployments, configurations, and changes.
- Drive continuous improvement in deployment processes and efficiency.
Essential
- Strong project management and organisational skills.
- Ability to coordinate multi-disciplinary teams (engineering, logistics, contractors, station staff).
- Excellent problem-solving, troubleshooting, and decision-making abilities.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Risk assessment and mitigation planning.
- Ability to interpret technical drawings and installation manuals.
- Proven experience in deploying hardware in operational transport or similar safety-critical environments.
- Understanding of electromechanical systems, IT hardware, and field equipment integration.
- Experience managing budgets, schedules, and resource allocation.
Desirable
- Negotiation and supplier management skills.
- Knowledge of lean deployment methodologies and continuous improvement.
- Ability to train and mentor junior staff/contractors.
- Familiarity with remote monitoring and diagnostic tools.
- Rail industry experience with Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) systems, including gate lines, validators, or related equipment.
- Familiarity with cybersecurity and networking considerations for connected hardware.
- Experience with vendor hardware acceptance testing and commissioning.
- Exposure to UK rail standards (e.g., Network Rail, TOCs, TfL, RSSB).
