About the Role

We are looking for a Senior Data Engineer with deep expertise in Azure and SQL to build, optimize, and deliver scalable data solutions across multiple client projects. In this role, you will work independently as well as part of a broader data team, engaging directly with customers, translating business needs into technical solutions, and ensuring best practices across data architecture, governance, and performance.
This position requires a strong ability to work end-to-end — from designing pipelines to delivering clean, reliable datasets that enable analytics, BI, and decision-making.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain scalable data solutions using Azure and SQL
  • Work confidently both independently and within a team, depending on the project
  • Engage directly with clients and communicate technical concepts clearly
  • Support roadmap planning, architecture decisions, and governance processes
  • Translate business requirements into data models and pipelines
  • Work across ingestion, transformation, warehousing, and optimization
  • Ensure security, performance, and reliability of data systems
  • Deliver measurable improvements to client data platforms
  • Apply best practices in Azure cloud data engineering

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in data engineering
  • Azure — 5+ years Hands-on experience building, deploying, and operating production-grade data solutions using Azure services such as Azure Data Factory, Azure SQL, Azure Storage, Azure Synapse, or similar.
  • SQL — 5+ years Deep expertise in writing complex queries, optimizing performance, handling large datasets, and working with relational data models.
  • Databricks — 1+ year Practical experience using Databricks notebooks, Spark jobs, Delta Lake, or distributed data processing workflows.
  • Data Lakes — 1+ year Experience designing, implementing, or maintaining lakehouse architectures, including structured and unstructured data ingestion.
  • Minimum of 5 delivered data projects, Including at least one where you acted as project lead (technical or delivery).
  • Strong communication skills — able to work directly with business stakeholders and present technical topics clearly.
  • Ability to translate business requirements into scalable data solutions.
  • Comfortable working independently when needed — confident owning technical delivery end-to-end.

Nice to Have

  • Python for data workflows — Experience using Python for ETL, data transformation, automation scripts, and integration with Azure data services or Databricks.
  • Azure DevOps Pipelines — Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines for data engineering workflows, including deployment automation, version control, and environment management.
  • Data Warehouse design experience — Understanding of dimensional modeling, star schemas, fact/dimension tables, and best practices for analytical data architecture.
  • DP-203 Certification — Microsoft Certified: Azure Data Engineer Associate.
  • Experience across multiple client projects or consulting environments — Ability to adapt to different industries, data maturity levels, and stakeholder expectations, bringing best practices into new contexts.

Benefits

  • Fixed Shifts: 12:00 PM - 9:30 PM IST (Summer) | 1:00 PM - 10:30 PM IST (Winter)
  • No Weekend Work: Real work-life balance, not just words
  • Day 1 Benefits: Laptop and full medical insurance provided
  • Support That Matters:Mentorship, community, and forums where ideas are shared
  • True Belonging: A long-term career where your contributions are valued
At Smart Working, you’ll never be just another remote hire.
