The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is a public benefit corporation responsible for public transportation in the New York City metropolitan area of the U.S. state of New York. As North America's largest transportation network, the MTA serves a population of approximately 15.3 million people across a 5,000-square-mile travel area surrounding New York City, Long Island, southeastern New York State, and Connecticut. The authority’s vast network comprises the nation’s largest bus fleet and more subway and commuter rail cars than all other U.S. transit systems combined, carrying over 11 million passengers on an average weekday systemwide.

Founded in 1965, the MTA has grown to employ approximately 70,000 people in a variety of positions, ranging from bus and train operators to engineers, accountants, and policy experts.
