This position is posted by Jobgether on behalf of a partner company. We are currently looking for a Lead Backend Engineer in the European Union.
This is a high-impact role for a seasoned backend engineer who thrives on designing scalable, secure, and efficient infrastructure for mobile-first products. You will take ownership of the backend architecture, guiding the evolution of systems to support millions of daily active users while ensuring reliability, performance, and compliance. Working closely with product, mobile, and engineering teams, you will influence technical strategy, shape engineering practices, and deliver APIs and services that empower a growing user base. This role offers autonomy, collaboration, and the opportunity to define the technical foundation of a rapidly expanding platform.
Accountabilities
- Lead the design, implementation, and evolution of backend architecture, ensuring scalability, reliability, and security.
- Build and maintain efficient, backward-compatible APIs optimized for mobile clients.
- Design scalable data models and database schemas to support rapid product iteration and high user growth.
- Define SLOs/SLIs, implement monitoring, logging, tracing, and lead incident response and root-cause analysis.
- Ensure authentication, encryption, and GDPR (or equivalent) compliance across all backend systems.
- Document backend architecture, workflows, and best practices for team alignment and onboarding.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with mobile, product, and operations teams to balance simplicity and long-term scalability.
- Maintain and improve CI/CD pipelines and Infrastructure as Code practices.
- Contribute to AI-driven features and notification systems enhancing mobile user experiences.
Requirements
- Proven experience designing and scaling backend systems for millions of users.
- Strong hands-on expertise in JavaScript/TypeScript and cloud platforms (preferably GCP).
- Experience with Firebase (Auth, Firestore, Cloud Functions) is a plus.
- Proficiency in SQL and NoSQL databases with scalable data model design.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines, Infrastructure as Code, and API versioning strategies.
- Knowledge of security, privacy, and compliance best practices.
- Product-oriented and pragmatic, with strong communication skills to articulate trade-offs and technical decisions.
- Adaptable and iterative, comfortable working in a startup environment with fast growth.
- Understanding of mobile client needs and delivering APIs to support them efficiently.
- Reliability-driven, with focus on operational excellence and measurable performance.
Nice-to-have: ETL processes, modern data stack tools (Dagster, dbt, Snowflake), AI integrations, and experience with silent push notifications.
