We are seeking an experienced Business Intelligence Developer to serve as the senior technical leader for our entire business intelligence reporting infrastructure. This hands on ownership role will be responsible for transforming raw data into actionable insights through Power BI dashboards, while mentoring a team of developers in report development and delivery. The ideal candidate combines deep technical expertise in SQL, ETL, and Power BI with strong business acumen and the ability to translate complex business requirements into elegant data solutions. Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the technical lead and subject matter expert for all business intelligence initiatives
- Own the end-to-end BI reporting process from requirements gathering through deployment
- Mentor junior developers, providing technical guidance and code review
- Collaborate with business stakeholders across departments to understand analytical needs and translate them into technical requirements
- Establish and maintain BI standards, best practices, and governance frameworks
- Drive continuous improvement and continuous delivery in reporting processes and data quality
- Design, develop, and deploy sophisticated Power BI dashboards and reports that deliver actionable business insights
- Architect and optimize data models to support scalable, performant reporting solutions
- Develop complex SQL queries for data extraction, transformation, and analysis across SQL Server (on-premises) and Azure SQL environments
- Build and maintain ETL processes to transform raw data into clean, analytics-ready datasets
- Create and optimize stored procedures, views, and database objects to support reporting needs
- Implement row-level security, data governance, and access controls within Power BI
- Troubleshoot and resolve data quality issues and performance bottlenecks
- Facilitate requirements gathering sessions with business users to understand reporting needs
- Document business requirements and translate them into technical specifications
- Provide recommendations on data visualization best practices and dashboard design
- Own the process of taking raw data from various systems and transforming it into finished dashboards
- Coordinate with IT and data teams to ensure data availability and quality
- Manage report deployment schedules, data refresh processes, and monitoring
- Maintain documentation for all BI solutions, data models, and processes
Required Qualifications Technical Skills
• Expert-level proficiency in Power BI including:
◦ Power BI Desktop and Power BI Service ◦ DAX (Data Analysis Expressions) for complex calculations and measures ◦ Power Query (M language) for data transformation ◦ Data modeling (star schema, dimensional modeling) ◦ Report performance optimization
• Advanced SQL skills including:
◦ Complex queries with multiple joins, CTEs, and subqueries ◦ Stored procedures, functions, and views ◦ Query optimization and performance tuning ◦ Experience with both SQL Server (on-premises) and Azure SQL
- Strong ETL/data transformation experience
- Understanding of data warehousing concepts and best practices
- Experience with SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) - strong candidates will have built and maintained SSRS reports as well
- A strong candidate for this position will have a comprehensive background in database administration, demonstrated by proficiency in managing and maintaining database systems like SQL Server, Oracle, or MySQL. Key skills should include database installation, configuration, performance tuning, the ability to design and implement robust backup and recovery solutions, and create appropriate access paradigms for individual users and roles.
- Experience with version control (Git) and deployment processes
Business Skills
- Proven ability to mentor technical teams, including remote/offshore resources
- Experience gathering and documenting business requirements from non-technical stakeholders
- Strong project management skills with ability to manage multiple priorities
- Excellent communication skills with ability to present complex technical concepts to various audiences
- Strategic thinking with ability to align BI initiatives with business objectives
- Demonstrated experience operating within an IT organization
Experience
- 7+ years of experience in business intelligence, data analytics, or related field
- 3+ years of hands-on experience with Power BI in a production environment
- 5+ years of experience writing complex SQL queries
- Demonstrated experience owning BI projects from conception to delivery
- Experience mentoring junior developers or analysts
Preferred Qualifications
• Power Platform experience including:
◦ Power Apps for building data collection applications ◦ Power Automate for workflow automation ◦ Basic understanding is sufficient; not required to be fully proficient
- Experience with Azure data services (Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse, Azure Analysis Services)
- Microsoft certifications (e.g., Power BI Data Analyst Associate, Azure Data Engineer)
- Experience with Agile/Scrum methodologies
- Familiarity with Python or R for advanced analytics
