ICON plc is a world-leading healthcare intelligence and clinical research organization. We’re proud to foster an inclusive environment driving innovation and excellence, and we welcome you to join us on our mission to shape the future of clinical development

Solutions Architect, Language Services (AI & Management System Integration)
Location: Flexible / Remote

As a Solutions Architect specializing in language services, you will design, implement, and optimize end-to-end solutions that integrate AI-driven language technologies with Translation Management Systems (TMS), Content Management Systems (CMS), and other enterprise platforms. A critical part of the role is partnering with our in-house software development and our language services operations team to build an orchestrated language-services technology environment—a coherent, modular ecosystem in which every component works seamlessly together. You will translate business requirements into scalable, secure architectures, ensuring accelerated multilingual content delivery, consistent quality, and actionable linguistic insights.

What you will be doing

1. Architectural Design & Integration

  • Lead requirements-gathering workshops with internal stakeholders, external clients, and in-house developers to define integration points and orchestration patterns.
  • Produce solution blueprints, data-flow diagrams, and interface specifications that balance security, scalability, and maintainability.
  • Design and oversee robust APIs, webhooks, and middleware bridging TMS and CAT systems (e.g., XTM, XTRF, memoQ, and our inhouse system) with CMS, DMS (e.g. Wordpress, Sharepoint, Veeva) and other core systems.

2. AI & Automation Strategy

  • Establish frameworks for AI based (language) technologies and adaptive learning loops that continuously improve quality.
  • Partner with data-science teams and internal developers to embed custom NLP components (e.g., terminology QA, sentiment analysis) into the localization pipeline.
  • Define and track KPIs (quality, throughput, cost) that quantify the impact of AI and orchestration.

3. Technical Leadership & Implementation

  • Co-architect with the in-house development team a service layer that orchestrates content flows, scheduling, and real-time status updates across all language-technology components.
  • Provide guidance on cloud infrastructure (AWS, Azure, GCP) for deploying AI inference endpoints, translation-memory caches, and containerized TMS instances.
  • Review and validate custom code (Python, Java, C#, etc) and low-code automations, ensuring they meet performance, security, and compliance standards.

4. Internal & Client Collaboration

  • Serve as the primary technical liaison during pre-sales, crafting solution proposals and presenting high-level architectures to clients.
  • Facilitate joint design sessions that include linguists, project managers, product owners, and software engineers to align scope, data models, and orchestration workflows.
  • Lead pilot projects, providing regular status updates, risk assessments, and mitigation strategies.

5. Quality Assurance & Continuous Improvement

  • Implement automated QA checks (e.g., terminology compliance, tag integrity
  • Monitor production environments, troubleshoot integration issues, and spearhead iterative enhancements.

Your profile

  • Education & Experience
    • Bachelor’s or Master’s in Computer Science, Engineering, Computational Linguistics, or related discipline, or equivalent experience
    • 5+ years designing and deploying enterprise-level solutions; at least 3 in language services/localization.
    • Proven experience embedding AI/NLP components in production systems and collaborating closely with internal software teams.
  • Technical Skills
    • RESTful API design, secure authentication (OAuth 2.0, JWT).
    • Deep familiarity with at least one enterprise TMS and its SDK/API.
    • Familiarity with programming languages (Python, Java, C# etc) and experience with containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).
    • Experience co-engineering connectors in partnership with in-house development teams.
  • AI & NLP Expertise
    • Hands-on with neural MT engines, LLM APIs, and NLP libraries
    • Understanding of data-privacy regulations (GDPR, CCPA) and secure data-pipeline design.
  • Soft Skills & Leadership
    • Exceptional cross-functional communication—able to bridge gaps between linguists, product owners, and developers.
    • Demonstrated ability to foster a culture of documentation and knowledge sharing.
    • Consultative, client-facing mindset with strong presentation skills.

Quality Focus

Automated QA gates embedded in localization pipeline ensure linguistic and technical accuracy without manual bottlenecks.

Collaboration & Mentoring

Frequent architecture reviews, paired design sessions, and knowledge-sharing forums keep dev and localization teams aligned.
