Your primary responsibility will be to ensure the Company services retail installment sale contracts in accordance with the law and Company policy. You will provide timely and professional legal advice and counsel to business colleagues on product initiatives to address legal, regulatory and policy concerns and ensure alignment with Company strategic objectives.
You will need to be tech-savvy with excellent collaboration skills. If assigned, you will also be expected to represent the Company’s interests with regulators and other outside parties.
Outcomes and Activities:
- This position will work from home; occasional planned travel to our Southfield, Michigan office may be required. However, this position is permitted to work at our Southfield, Michigan office if requested by the team member.
- As servicing product counsel, you will serve as a primary legal advisor, providing direct support (verbally and in writing, as appropriate) to Product Managers, Engineers, Designers, Sales, Marketing and others on matters related to the Company’s servicing products, systems and operations.
- You will serve as Subject Matter Expert (SME) on consumer protection law and regulation impacting the servicing of a retail installment transaction, including but not limited to fifty state knowledge of retail installment sales acts and/or consumer credit codes, Article 9 and other laws relating to repossession, debt collection, state certificate of title laws, federal consumer bankruptcy law, TILA, FTC Act, SCRA, and state and federal UDAAP.
- You will provide primary legal support to servicing operations leaders and teams, including but not limited to repossession, redemption, remarketing, titles, deficiency collection and bankruptcy teams, as well as servicing systems’ product and engineering teams.
- If assigned, you will integrate into cross-functional Customer Value Teams (CVTs) consisting of colleagues from Product, Engineering, Design, Operations and Marketing to provide legal, business, and strategic advice. You will collaborate with CVTs to creatively solve problems identified by the business and support the execution and delivery of a product roadmap.
- You will coordinate closely with other Legal department SMEs to ensure the timely delivery of practical legal advice to CVTs and servicing business teams.
- You will analyze changes to laws, regulations and policies affecting motor vehicle finance servicing and relevant to product goals and objectives and clearly communicate changes and impacts of changes to CVTs and servicing and operations business teams. As necessary, you will scope, prioritize and execute product enhancements or other system or process changes to respond to regulatory and legal changes.
- You will recognize and balance priority of business initiatives with legal risk and scale your advice to provide guidance appropriate to the successful implementation of business initiatives while mitigating risk to the Company.
- You will support the development and maintenance of job aids, guidelines and policies related to business teams to whom you provide legal advice.
- You will develop and maintain ongoing relationships with all levels of the business to maintain knowledge about daily business operations, in order to provide appropriate legal advice and guidance on servicing related issues.
- You will support CVTs and servicing-related business units by negotiating and drafting a variety of legal agreements, including vendor agreements. You will serve as the principal legal resource for the Company’s vendor management initiatives.
- You will complete special projects and support Compliance Management Program initiatives.
- If assigned, you will develop relationships with regulators and explain and advocate for Company practices, systems, processes and policies.

Requirements:
- Licensed to practice law, with a minimum of 12 years’ experience. (Senior Manager)
- Licensed to practice law, with a minimum of 10 years’ experience. (Manager)
- Exceptional research and writing skills.
- Excellent professional and academic credentials.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills and a commitment to professionalism and collegiality.
- Ability to confidently interact with senior business leaders.
Preferred:
- Knowledge of Consumer Financial Services law.
Targeted Compensation:
$150,000 - $212,000 base salary + an annual bonus plan. (Senior Manager)
$130,000 - $183,000 base salary + an annual bonus plan. (Manager)
This position is not currently open to individuals who require sponsorship now or in the future to work legally for Credit Acceptance, such as H-1b / H-4 or F-1 OPT visa holders.
