Overview of CommonLit

CommonLit is a nonprofit education technology organization dedicated to ensuring that all students, especially students in Title I schools, graduate with the reading, writing, communication, and problem-solving skills they need to be successful in college and beyond. We envision a world where all students get the opportunity to have a world class education. We operate an online reading program for grades 3-12, www.CommonLit.org, that is used by teachers in over 90,000 American schools.

The Opportunity

CommonLit’s Marketing Team is looking for a true force multiplier – a Product Marketing Specialist who will bring clarity and consistency to how we talk about what CommonLit is and why it matters. Our team markets a curriculum, a text library, assessments, professional development, implementation services, and a distinct pedagogical POV, all under one brand. We are seeking someone who will be wholly dedicated to owning the translation layer between our products and our market: developing the messaging frameworks, collateral, and content that help districts understand CommonLit, trust it, and choose it.

We are looking for our first Product Marketer to join the team, a Product Marketing Specialist, who will level-up our team’s approach to positioning and external communication in service of our mission and goals. This candidate is someone who can both immediately jump into urgent messaging and collateral work and build the foundational systems that ensure our marketing stays sharp, consistent, and effective in years to come.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Develop and own CommonLit's core messaging framework, translating a complex, multi-product offering into clear, differentiated language for educators and district leaders

  • Build and maintain one-pagers, pitch decks, and district-facing materials that the Sales and District Success teams use

  • Produce product-first content, including resources that translate instructional and research concepts into accessible, compelling materials for educators, including materials instructional leaders can take to curriculum committees, school boards, and parents

  • Articulate CommonLit's instructional stances, curriculum choices, and efficacy evidence in plain language that earns the trust of educators or parents who may be skeptical of EdTech or our program

  • Support initiatives to nurture customers in-product and drive deeper usage and acquisition, including in-product messaging and drip email campaigns

  • Partner with the Product team to manage timelines, track deliverables, and ensure in-product initiatives and the overall product roadmap are on schedule

  • Partner with the Product team to develop go-to-market messaging for product launches

  • Drive cross-functional alignment with Academics, Design, and Engineering, translating priorities between teams, communicating responsibilities, and holding stakeholders accountable to deadlines to keep projects moving

  • Create knowledge management systems and stitch together cross-team dependencies

  • Set success metrics, monitor against milestones, and provide data-driven recommendations

  • Contribute to content strategy around our pedagogical POV and instructional stances

  • Take the Product Marketing function on the team from 0 → 1. CommonLit has never hired a Product Marketer before and this person will help shape what the function looks like on the Marketing team

Qualifications

  • Required:

  • 4-7 years of Product Marketing experience, with at least a portion in EdTech or an adjacent field

  • Experience with branding, messaging, positioning, and product launches

  • Strong writer with excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Obsessed with the customer problem and bring that curiosity to everything you do

  • Collaborative, cross-functional disposition with a bias toward documentation – you close loops, write things down, and work well across teams toward shared goals

  • Entrepreneurial and GSD attitude – you're an ambitious self-starter who sweats the details, welcomes feedback, stays organized, and thrives in a fast-paced environment

  • Preferred:

  • Experience building or creating a new function at an organization

  • Background in K-12 education as a former teacher, curriculum developer, instructional coach, or similar role

  • Experience marketing literacy, ELA, or curriculum products specifically

  • Familiarity with how districts make purchasing decisions, including procurement timelines, curriculum adoption cycles, and the role of instructional leaders

Physical & Additional Requirements

  • This role involves prolonged periods in a stationary position at a desk and working on a computer

  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis; CommonLit is not sponsoring visas or work authorization at this time.
