We are seeking a dynamic Database Administrator (DBA). The DBA will be supporting the VA’s Medical Disability Examination (MDE) Audit program is responsible for efficiently managing, securing, and operating databases that store sensitive medical and disability examination records. The DBA plays a crucial role in supporting the office's mission by maintaining the systems that store, process, and ensure the data used to support audit activities and produce reports is of the utmost quality.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure databases are running efficiently and are optimized for the best performance. This includes regular maintenance tasks, performance tuning, and capacity planning
  • Implement and maintain stringent security measures to protect sensitive medical data
  • Ensure compliance with relevant regulations such as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and specific government data handling and privacy standards
  • Develop and maintain robust backup and disaster recovery plans to prevent data loss and ensure data availability during a system failure or disaster
  • Monitor data quality and integrity within the databases. Implement controls and validation processes to ensure the accuracy and reliability of medical and disability examination data
  • Work closely with IT teams, medical professionals, and department management to support data needs, resolve database-related issues, and contribute to projects requiring database expertise
  • Provide support for reporting needs, including designing, executing complex queries, and developing procedures to extract data for analysis and reporting purposes

Requirements

  • Active Public Trust is required
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology or related fields
  • 5 years of experience as a database administrator, emphasizing the handling of sensitive or classified information.
  • Proficient in managing various DBMS like SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, or PostgreSQL
  • Knowledge of database setup, maintenance, and optimization is essential
  • Strong command of SQL for data manipulation, query writing, and database management
  • Ability to optimize database performance through indexing, query optimization, and system tuning
  • Knowledge of encryption, access control, and other security measures to protect sensitive medical data
  • Skills in developing and implementing backup strategies and disaster recovery plans for databases
  • Ability to design efficient data models and understand complex database structures, ensuring they meet the needs of the Medical Disability Examination (MDE) Audit program
  • Familiarity with scripting languages (e.g., PowerShell, Bash) for automating routine database tasks and processes
  • Understanding compliance in handling and storing sensitive personal and medical information
  • Ability to analyze and interpret complex data sets, troubleshoot issues, and implement solutions
  • Strong problem-solving skills to navigate challenges that arise during database management and maintenance
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for effectively conveying information to non-technical stakeholders and working collaboratively with IT teams and clients
  • Precision and attention to detail are crucial for managing the integrity and accuracy of sensitive medical data
  • Basic project management skills to manage timelines, resources, and documentation for database-related projects
  • Ability to adapt to new technologies and methodologies that could benefit the Medical Disability Examination (MDE) Audit program’s database infrastructure

Preferred Skills

  • Strong technical skills in database management systems (e.g., SQL Server, Oracle), including knowledge of SQL, database design, and performance tuning
  • Familiarity with medical data standards and regulations, with an understanding of government IT security and compliance guidelines
  • Ability to analyze complex data and solve problems effectively. Strong attention to detail is essential
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as the role involves coordination with various stakeholders
