THE ROLE

AG1 is seeking a dynamic Director, Paid Media (Contract) to lead the strategy, execution and optimization of our paid media efforts across all digital channels in the US. This role will be responsible for driving growth through innovative paid media strategies to enhance brand awareness, drive acquisition and retention. The Director, Paid Media will take ownership of high-impact campaigns, driving strategic initiative and optimizing media spend to maximize ROI.

Reporting to the VP, Acquisition and Paid Media, the ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of paid media channels, a data-driven mindset and strong ability to drive scalable media campaigns. We are seeking a candidate who harnesses expertise in various paid media platforms and technologies, and who has demonstrated experience in deploying strategies that not only achieve but exceed performance benchmarks. The Director, Paid Media will be a key player in pioneering new approaches and scaling successful campaigns, ensuring AG1 remains at the forefront of digital marketing innovation.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Oversee comprehensive paid media strategies across Paid Social (Meta, TikTok), Paid Search, Shopping, Pmax, Demand Gen and AppLovin, ensuring a high-growth channel mix.
  • Optimize paid media budgets based on a deep understanding of measurement across channels and different sources of truth, including attribution models, MTA, MMM, and incrementality.
  • Drive CVR improvements across all paid channels by leading rigorous landing page testing and run in-platform experiments to drive efficiency and volume.
  • Partner closely with the creative strategy team to fuel paid media channels with direct response ads that convert.
  • Innovate and advance the paid media approach of AG1 by exploring and implementing emerging technologies, channels and platforms.
  • Establish and nurture partnerships with key media agencies, vendors and industry leaders to enhance campaign effectiveness and expand reach.
  • Set and monitor performance benchmarks, providing key insights and recommendations for continuous improvement and strategic adjustments.
  • Ensure alignment of paid media strategies with overall brand positioning and marketing initiatives, driving cohesive messaging and impactful results
  • Inspire and lead a team, fostering an environment of excellence, innovation. and collaboration.
  • Stay ahead of industry trends and competitive dynamics, ensuring paid media strategies at AG1 are cutting edge and effective.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

  • 8-10+ years of experience in paid media strategy and execution, with a proven track record of leading successful multi-channel campaigns.
  • Expertise in managing large-scale media budgets and achieving substantial ROI across various digital platforms, including search, social, shopping, and programmatic.
  • Deep understanding of paid media channels with hands-on experience.
  • Thorough direct response creative strategy expertise across all channels
  • Strong analytical skills, with experience in setting performance benchmarks, analyzing results from multiple data sources (attribution, MMM and incrementality tests) and deriving actionable insights for optimization
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities, with experience in mentoring and managing team to drive high performance and innovation
  • Excellent communication skills, capable of presenting complex strategies and results to leadership and key stakeholders
  • A strategic mindset with a focus on aligning media efforts and brand objective
  • Proven ability and interest to stay ahead of industry trends and integrate new technologies and approaches into media strategies
  • Strong partnership skills, with experience collaboration with media agencies, vendors and cross-functional teams to achieve campaign success
  • Experience working with cross functional teams and senior leaders.
  • Strong interpersonal, written communication, and organizational skills.

Despite early financial challenges, including significant personal debt for Ashenden, Athletic Greens steadily grew, bootstrapping its way to impressive revenue figures. The company operated as a fully remote business from its inception, a model it maintains today with a global team. A significant turning point came in 2021 and 2022, when Athletic Greens secured its first major external funding rounds, culminating in a $115 million investment that valued the company at $1.2 billion. This influx of capital was earmarked for scaling operations, product innovation, expanding geographic reach, and bolstering marketing efforts. The product itself has undergone numerous iterations, with the company emphasizing continuous improvement based on the latest scientific research. In 2023, the company officially rebranded from Athletic Greens to AG1, aligning the company name with its singular, well-known product and signaling its evolution beyond a simple 'greens' powder. Kat Cole, who joined as President and COO in 2021, was appointed CEO in July 2024, succeeding Ashenden who remains on the board. Today, AG1 continues to focus on its mission of empowering people to take ownership of their health through foundational nutrition, with its core product AG1 at the forefront of its offerings.
