POSITION OVERVIEW

Abacus Consulting is seeking an experienced Senior PHP Developer to lead the design, development, enhancement, and support of applications and integrations on the MADAPI platform. The successful candidate will bring strong PHP expertise combined with API development, system integration, and modern software engineering practices. This role requires a technically strong professional who can build scalable backend services, drive engineering best practices, and mentor the next generation of developers.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Development & Engineering

• Design, develop, test, and maintain robust PHP-based applications on the MADAPI platform.
• Build and enhance RESTful APIs, microservices, and backend integrations.
• Write clean, secure, scalable, and maintainable code aligned to coding standards.
• Optimise application performance, reliability, and database efficiency.
• Troubleshoot production issues and provide thorough root-cause analysis.

Platform Delivery

• Work closely with Product Owners, Business Analysts, Architects, and DevOps teams to deliver platform enhancements.
• Participate in sprint planning, estimations, backlog refinement, and retrospectives.
• Ensure successful deployments across development, test, and production environments.
• Support platform modernisation and technical debt reduction initiatives.

Leadership & Mentorship

• Provide technical leadership within the development squad.
• Mentor junior and mid-level developers through code reviews and hands-on coaching.
• Promote engineering best practices including CI/CD, automated testing, and secure coding standards.

Governance & Quality

• Conduct peer reviews and enforce development standards across the team.
• Ensure applications meet security, compliance, and performance requirements.
• Maintain technical documentation and solution design artefacts.

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

Technical Skills

• 7+ years of PHP development experience in enterprise or platform environments.
• Strong experience with modern PHP frameworks such as Laravel, Symfony, or CodeIgniter.
• Solid understanding of REST APIs, JSON, OAuth, JWT, and API integrations.
• Experience with relational databases including MySQL, PostgreSQL, or Microsoft SQL Server.
• Proficiency with version control using Git and collaborative development workflows.
• Hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps tooling.
• Experience with Azure Cloud services and cloud-native development practices.
• Experience using agentic development tools such as GitHub Copilot or Claude Code.
• Understanding of containerisation using Docker is advantageous.
• Strong debugging, performance tuning, and root-cause analysis capabilities.

Preferred Experience

• Experience working on API gateway or middleware platforms.
• Exposure to cloud platforms such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud Platform.
• Telecom or enterprise systems integration experience.
• Experience with event-driven architecture and message queues.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
• Relevant certifications in PHP, cloud platforms, or Agile delivery are advantageous.
