About Policygenius
Policygenius is the online insurance marketplace combining cutting-edge technology with the expertise of real licensed agents to help people get the coverage they need to protect their family, property, and finances with confidence. Since 2014, our content, digital tools, and experts have served as a resource for millions of people on their insurance journey, and we have sold more than $160 billion in coverage from our headquarters in New York City and Durham, North Carolina.
How we’re different
Comparison shopping made easy: No need to fill out forms on a dozen different sites — with Policygenius’ modern tools, you can compare quotes from multiple leading insurance companies side by side in minutes. Already have coverage? We can help you re-shop your policy to look for a lower rate.
Advice that puts you first: With hundreds of licensed insurance agents standing by and thousands of fact-checked articles on our site, we’ve got answers to all of your questions, whether you want to talk to someone live or research on your own.
Rigorous editorial standards: Our articles are written and edited by a best-in-class editorial team, then thoroughly fact-checked by licensed insurance agents and certified financial planners. Read more about our editorial standards, including our editorial process, leaders, and expert reviewers.
How we make money: We’re an independent insurance broker, so we get paid a commission by insurance companies for each sale. Insurance commissions are already built into the price of an insurance policy, so you’re not paying any extra for working with us to buy a policy. Our compensation on any particular purchase may vary depending on a number of factors, including the type and size of product, the insurer, and the volume of business we have with an insurer, but we don’t push for or give preference to any one insurer over another because of the commission. We're here to fight for you, not for ourselves.
What we value
Live by the golden rule. It's the easiest way to make sure we act with integrity. We follow it with our clients and each other.
It takes grit to be great. We aren't easily discouraged because we want our work to matter.
No chuckleheads allowed. There's no room here for bad attitudes, coasting, or entitlement.
Take the wheel. Everyone goes the extra mile for the company's success and our clients' happiness.
Work the problem. We know when to run through a wall and when to build a door.
Life's too short to be salty. We share laughs with the team, find the play in our work, and celebrate our successes.
We welcome diversity
We know that true collaboration is only possible when people of differing backgrounds, experiences, and opinions are truly welcomed. At Policygenius, diversity is more than just checking boxes of gender and ethnicity: It's a conscious daily effort to create an atmosphere in which all of our team members feel seen, valued, and supported. We also recognize that the work of diversity, equity, and inclusion is ongoing, and our efforts are always evolving. Our DEI committee meets regularly to ensure we’re fulfilling this promise to employees through education, training, events programming, and more, and our Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) — including PgPride, WomEng (women in engineering), PgBLACK, and AAPI Alliance — consult with senior leadership and our Employee Experience team to offer input and feedback.
Our history
In the early 2010s, two McKinsey consultants, Jennifer Fitzgerald and Francois de Lame, realized the insurance industry was stuck in the Stone Age. Their idea: “Could we modernize life insurance online and help people feel good about finding the right coverage?”
In 2014, they launched a startup in New York City called…KnowItOwl. The name didn’t last, but the idea did. By the end of the following year, the rebranded Policygenius had already reached more than 800,000 people looking for the right life insurance.
Since then, we’ve expanded to offer home, auto, disability, renters, and other types of insurance and opened a second headquarters in Durham, North Carolina. Today, we’ve helped millions of people find the best financial protection solutions for their needs — and judging from our reviews, we've helped them feel good about it.
