The Director of HR Project Management leads the delivery of complex, enterprise-scale HR initiatives by serving as the primary project management leader for the function. Accountable for establishing and maturing project management practices across HR, this role ensures disciplined execution, alignment to strategic priorities, and successful delivery of transformational efforts such as HR M&A integrations, and other critical transformative initiatives.

In addition to hands-on project leadership, this role leads the HR business management function, overseeing a small team responsible for core operational disciplines including risk, audit, budget, contracts, and accounts payable. Through this combined scope, the role ensures that both project execution and underlying operational management are aligned, well-governed, and positioned to support HR’s broader strategic objectives.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Function Leadership & Business Management Oversight

  • Provide strategic leadership for the HR Project Management and Business Management function, establishing governance, processes, tools, and operating cadence aligned with enterprise standards.

  • Directly lead and develop a small team (two direct reports) responsible for HR business management disciplines, including risk management, audit coordination, budget oversight, contract management, and accounts payable (A/P).

  • Ensure strong financial and operational management across HR, including planning, tracking, and optimization of budgets, vendor spend, and contractual commitments.

  • Establish and maintain effective risk and control frameworks, including audit readiness, issue tracking, and remediation.

  • Create visibility into HR operational performance through reporting, metrics, and insights that inform leadership decision-making.

Project & Program Leadership

  • Maintain a high-level, enterprise view of HR initiatives; ensure prioritization, alignment, and execution of key programs in partnership with the Office of the CHRO.

  • Serve as project leader for large-scale, complex initiatives (e.g., HR transformations, integrations/M&A, and strategic priorities).

  • Ensure risks, dependencies, and issues are actively managed with appropriate mitigation and escalation strategies.

  • Drive cross-functional coordination and ensure effective resource allocation across initiatives.

Capability Building & Process Excellence

  • Define and implement standardized project management and business management practices across HR to drive consistency and efficiency.

  • Provide training, coaching, and guidance to HR leaders and teams to strengthen adoption of project management disciplines.

  • Use data and insights to continuously improve processes, enhance service delivery, and optimize performance.

Stakeholder Engagement & Strategic Partnership

  • Partner with senior HR and business leaders to align on priorities, manage trade-offs, and ensure successful execution of strategic initiatives.

  • Serve as a trusted advisor on project, and operational matters, balancing strategic objectives with risk and compliance considerations.

  • Communicate progress, risks, and outcomes clearly to executive stakeholders.

People Leadership

  • Set clear performance objectives and hold team members accountable for results and development.

  • Build and develop a high-performing team with strong capabilities across project management and business operations.

  • Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Ability to integrate project management rigor with operational and financial oversight, ensuring holistic execution across HR.

  • Assist project owner(s) with building the structure and culture of the project team, and defining roles and responsibilities to enable achievement of project objectives and the effective operation of key business processes.

  • Demonstrated ability to align work with organizational strategy and drive outcomes across complex, matrixed environments.

  • Expertise in managing initiatives within cost, time, and quality parameters while balancing competing priorities.

  • Strong influencing skills; able to gain buy-in and navigate resistance across senior stakeholders.

  • Continuous improvement mindset with a focus on operational excellence, standardization, and scalability.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • 10–15+ years of experience in project management.

  • 6+ years of people leadership experience preferred.

  • Experience project managing M&A integrations highly preferred.
