At Nuna, our mission is to make high-quality healthcare affordable and accessible for everyone. We are dedicated to tackling one of our nation’s biggest problems with ingenuity, creativity, and a keen moral compass.Nuna is committed to simple principles: a rigorous understanding of data, modern technology, and most importantly, compassion and care for our fellow human. We want to know what really works, what doesn't—and why.

Nuna partners with healthcare payers, including government agencies and health plans, to turn data into learnings and information into meaning.

Nuna’s product offerings enable delivery of value-based care contracts, at scale across the United States. Value-based healthcare aims to shift reimbursement from fee-for-service to fee-for-value where providers are incentivized to deliver higher quality care to their patients at a lower cost. It is incredibly difficult to operationalize value-based arrangements due to the variability in both contract configurations and measurement of health outcomes. The Health Data Engineering team is accountable for creating automated and scalable tools for analysts to accurately and efficiently implement complex value-based care programs.

In this role, you’ll have the opportunity to form deep partnerships with a cross-functional team of analysts, engineers and product managers to drive continuous improvement of delivery speed and analytic quality through introduction and adoption of software development and data science best practices. You will be responsible for design and deployment of reusable healthcare-based logic in support of accurate and scalable value-based payment solutions. You will provide thought leadership to product managers and influence Nuna’s product roadmap with a focus on analytic tooling maturity and scalable healthcare solutions. Finally, you will be a force multiplier for Nuna’s analysts by introducing software development and testing practices tuned to value-based care payment models.

In this role, you will:

  • Lead, coordinate, and train health data analysts in design and deployment of scalable products for healthcare plans and providers
  • Participate in the development of industry accepted healthcare data models and rules-based engines
  • Automate and optimize data pipelines with a focus on logical transformations and statistical models
  • Build, maintain and optimize data pipelines using big data technologies

Required Qualifications

  • 10+ years of technical software development via Python, Spark, SQL, Git Integration and testing frameworks
  • Domain experience working with healthcare data paired with a passion to connect with, understand, and shape the healthcare industry
  • Experience building production-hardened data pipelines, with consideration for performance, scalability, reliability, and repeatability using orchestration tools like Airflow or Prefect
  • Experience building Spark jobs, as well as profiling and debugging them
  • Experience rapidly prototyping new product concepts, especially for enterprise clients
  • Understanding of data testing concepts and the ability to consistently apply them
  • Knowledge of database fundamentals like indexing and SQL queries
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, keen attention to detail and deadline driven

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Machine Learning concepts such as statistical modeling diagnostic testing (Continuous + Categorical)
  • Experience with AWS
  • Experience working at or with health plans or providers

We take into account an individual’s qualifications, skillset, and experience in determining final salary. Nuna is a healthcare technology company headquartered in San Francisco, California. Our mission is to help make high-quality healthcare affordable and accessible for everyone. We do this by building data solutions for healthcare payers and providers to measure and improve their cost and quality outcomes

The story of the big sister

When Jini Kim was just a child, she guided her family through the American healthcare system.

At age two, Jini’s brother Kimong was diagnosed with severe autism. By age eight, he developed grand mal seizures. He hit his head when he was frustrated, flapped his arms when he was excited, and learned only three words: eomma (mom), appa (dad), and nuna (big sister).

As recent immigrants from South Korea, Jini and Kimong’s parents were unable to confidently speak or read English. Their family struggled to keep up with mounting medical bills. In 1990, at age nine, Jini helped to enroll Kimong in Medicaid, protecting her family from debilitating debt.

Fixing American healthcare became Jini’s life’s work, and when she founded her own company, she named it Nuna in honor of Kimong, caregivers, and big sisters everywhere.

From family to company

Nuna was the natural evolution of Jini’s family’s struggles with the healthcare system and experience with Medicaid. In 2015, we built Medicaid’s first centralized data warehouse, which stores records for over 74.5 million enrollees across the United States. Since then, we’ve expanded our product lines and our team.

Today, we partner with state and federal government agencies, health plans, and provider systems to turn data into insights. Every solution we provide is designed to overcome core obstacles in healthcare—fragmented data, inefficient processes, misaligned incentives, and inconsistent cost and quality information.

Our teams values

While each person makes a unique contribution to Nuna, we share a common set of values that shape our work and relationships.

  • We Are All Kimong's Nuna: We’re advocates for people through data—we are guided by the question, “will this help people like Kimong?”

  • Every row of data is a life: We’re trusted with data—it’s on us to protect and secure it against misuse. We treat it like it was our own data

  • Rise by lifting others: We’re compassionate, fostering a culture where Nunas feel respected, included, and able to do their best work

  • Be the people we serve: We’re intentional about hiring people with diverse backgrounds to shape the future of healthcare and drive our mission

  • Clean and Crisp: We are all different—to advance our mission together, we must be concise, clear, and respectful in our communication

  • Own It: We’re courageous and comfortable making hard decisions, but also mindful to learn from our mistakes
