MURAL's mission is to inspire teams to connect and innovate, while bringing purpose and intention to the craft of collaboration.

MURAL created the Collaborative Intelligence System to power cultures of effective collaboration where everyone is connected, contributing, and empowered to deliver business-driving outcomes.

Founded in 2011, MURAL is a leading innovator in visual collaboration for hybrid, remote, and distributed teams. We believe in what we build, and our team of more than 700 MURAListas around the world collaborate in the MURAL app. Our values guide our intentionally inclusive product and culture, which includes collaboration design education and a flexible monthly stipend for learning, wellness, and coworking.

MURAL has raised $200M to date and is growing rapidly to fulfill our mission. The company is trusted by 95% of the Fortune 100, including innovative teams at IBM, Intuit, GitLab, Microsoft, and Atlassian.

As a Pillar Architect Software Engineer at MURAL working with the Canvas group, you will work across engineering teams, product managers, design teams, and leadership, providing architectural expertise, mentorship, working proofs of concept, and technical design guidance.

MURAL is transforming how teams put imagination to work by making it easy for everyone to collaborate visually from anywhere, and for us to succeed in large customer environments, we need to have sophisticated and smooth-running capabilities! The 8 teams and approximately 45 engineers in our Canvas group own the default application across the web and its implementation across multiple devices. Features such as Tables, Connectors, Voting, Drawing, Find-on-Canvas, as well as the rendering and performance optimizations, are the bread and butter of Canvas! Like all of MURAL, our organization is globally distributed and works 100% remotely!

In this role, you will:

  • Report directly to our Senior Director of Engineering, Canvas.

  • Collaborate with engineering leadership as a key author of our technical strategy.

  • Guide our teams in technical decision-making without gatekeeping through intentional culture creation, transparency, and occasional formal review.

  • Help teams choose the right tools, frameworks, or techniques for their projects.

  • Contribute to engineering-wide initiatives as a leader in MURAL's engineering leadership team.

  • Serve as a key resource for our engineering teams and identify and raise cross-team and cross-org technical, process, and culture issues, working with other technical and non-technical leaders as needed.

  • Depending on the applicant, you may spend less time writing code, and more time having conversations with stakeholders, writing, reviewing, and socializing plans.

  • Build alliances with your teams, your peer leaders, and leaders inside and outside of the Enterprise pillar that you'll be partnering with regularly

  • Begin learning the problem domains your teams work in, understanding their customers, and learning MURAL's product and capabilities

  • Understand your pillar's workflows, constraints, roles, ceremonies, purpose, and needs from the business

  • Familiarize yourself with problems to be solved in the next 2 quarters

  • Partner with tech leads on your teams and be involved in decision-making and authoring design documents

  • Partner on at least one customer critical issue. Provide guidance for resolving the problem at hand while familiarizing yourself with the workflow for resolution

  • Become conversationally fluent about the high-level architecture of the MURAL codebases and your teams' feature areas

  • Identify key areas of technical debt or future risk for each team. Work with your engineering, product, and design leadership to identify needed investments and advocate for their prioritization

  • Establish working relationships with other pillar architects and engineering leaders.

  • Develop a strong internal reputation within your stakeholder community as a great partner to work with

  • Mentor team architects within your pillar on technical topics and coding/design best practices

  • Identify and raise cross-team and cross-org technical, process, and culture issues

  • Review proposed project plans and evaluate technical decisions, providing thoughtful and actionable reviews and identifying potential future problems, scaling issues, etc.

  • Deep experience in technical leadership as a lead engineer for multiple teams (with significant exposure to Front-end architectures)

  • Experience working in a software engineering organization of MURAL's size or larger (~25 product teams, ~200 engineers).

  • You seek first to collaborate, understand, and listen before sharing your opinion.

  • Strong verbal and written English communication skills and comfortability presenting highly technical topics to a highly technical audience and less technical business stakeholders.

  • Experience building software using React or another modern frontend framework and Node.js across the full stack, but are more interested in broad exposure and helping others tackle their problems and less interested in spending 40 hours a week in a code editor.

  • Experience mentoring Senior and Staff level engineers.

  • Designed systems that are used in a large-scale production environment (Micro-services vs Monolith)

  • Deep understanding of distributed systems, design patterns, and practices related to building fault-tolerant, highly available, performant applications.

  • An advocate for quality and participate in setting standards for the organization.

Nice to Have:

  • Experience building and operating systems pertaining to mobile application development (React Native)

  • Experience building and operating systems pertaining different rendering technologies (pixie.js, flutter, wasm)

  • Experience working at and helping companies achieve efficiencies at scale

  • Exposure to working with remote, multicultural teams
