The general salary range for this full-time position is $91,500 – 137,300. Salary offers will be commensurate with experience, qualifications, skills, training and education. Humane World for Animals, a global leader in animal advocacy and protection, is seeking a Shelter Outreach and Engagement for the Outreach, Engagement, and Training department. In this position you will lead the Shelter Outreach and Engagement team for the Outreach, Engagement and Training department. Build and strengthen partnerships with animal shelters, rescue organizations and national animal welfare partners in order to build a stronger animal protection movement. Do so by leading the Shelter and Rescue Partner, Adopters Welcome training, and shelter mentorship programs, shelter policy engagement, development of professional resources, and thought leadership in this area

Responsibilities:

  • Develops and directs the overall strategy for the Shelter Outreach and Engagement team including creating and implementing the team’s priorities, programs, and policy efforts;
  • Leads policy engagement with shelters and rescues by aligning Humane World priorities that intersect with animal shelters including companion animal issues and access to care. Secures endorsements, contributes feedback on the effects of policies on animal shelters, serves as an expert in legislative matters, writes legislative comments, testifies as appropriate, and analyzes shelter data to inform policy efforts;
  • Builds and strengthens collaborative relationships with animal shelters and rescue organizations to support the adoption of data-driven practices in response to changes in the animal sheltering landscape and in alignment with the organization’s priorities. Does so by directly leading the Adopters Welcome training program, including managing contract employees, developing shelter-specific content and overseeing the shelter mentorship grant and training program, aligning Humane World priorities and expertise with the needs of shelters;
  • Designs training and professional development content with the HumanePro team. Leads and coordinates virtual and in-person trainings and reviews and publishes content for HumanePro and Humane World through blogs, interviews, fact sheets, manuals, toolkits and website development;
  • Works closely with the Animal Care Expo team to solicit and review proposals for the annual conference, and ensure presentations are in service to the animal sheltering field and in alignment with Humane World’s supportive approach to animal shelters and rescues. Attends Animal Care Expo and creates opportunities to network with, and learn from, local organizations and national animal welfare partners;
  • Develops policies and internal and external messaging concerning the animal sheltering field. Using trusted shelter data and input from shelters and rescues, coordinates between Humane World teams to align priorities, messaging, decision-making, and industry best practices. Creates opportunities for animal shelters to contribute perspectives to our short- and long-term goals;
  • Serves as a subject matter expert for media outlets on pet keeping trends, animal shelter and rescue messaging, and animal shelter-related policy efforts;
  • Oversees the Shelter and Rescue partner program and the outreach strategy that supports the placement of animals assisted by the organization’s cruelty and disaster response efforts in the United States and Canada. Ensures all legal requirements are met through relevant transfer agreements, partner agreements, and non-disclosure agreements when applicable;
  • Promotes and cultivates the organizational brand with animal shelters, rescue organizations and national animal welfare partners. Maintains an understanding of the role of others in the movement and finds opportunities for collaboration;
  • Manages the Shelter Outreach team to ensure that staff achieve their goals, including providing staff with guidance and advice, training, performance management, leadership development, and career development;
  • Performs other duties or responsibilities, as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • At least five years of experience in animal sheltering required;
  • Bachelor's degree in Nonprofit Management, or another related field, or equivalent work experience, required. Master’s degree preferred;
  • A minimum of nine (9) years of experience in project management, animal sheltering, animal welfare, or another related field required;
  • Management/supervisory experience required;
  • Certified Animal Welfare Administrator (CAWA) strongly preferred ;
  • Knowledge of animal protection issues that impact animal shelters, including companion animal policies and access to care policies strongly preferred;
  • Ability to review and analyze legislation as it pertains to animal shelters;
  • Ability to review and analyze trusted shelter and rescue data;
  • Leadership ability in work setting. Flexible, willing to learn, and anticipates the needs of self and staff;
  • Ability to set a positive tone for employees during their day;
  • Comfortable in a changing environment; able to meet deadlines; self-motivated and proactive;
  • Ability to manage challenges requiring problem resolution and conflict management with excellent interpersonal and intervention skills;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Public speaking skills strongly preferred;
  • Knowledge of business operations, including effective short and long-term strategic planning, budget development and management processes;
  • Attention to detail and commitment to excellence, demonstrated by the delivery of quality and timely outcomes;
  • Strong interest in animal protection issues preferred;
  • Willing and able to travel, as necessary

This is a US position in the DC Metro Area – Remote Eligible
