Engineering Manager

FutureLearn

Job description

We are hiring an Engineering Manager to work alongside our existing Engineering Managers and the Director of Technology to oversee the management of our engineers and improve processes & working practices within the Technology team.

Engineers at FutureLearn work in multidisciplinary product teams, collaborating with designers, other engineers, product managers and stakeholders. The Engineering Managers sit outside of product teams and manage engineers across different teams and disciplines.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Engineering Manager reports to a senior Engineering Manager and has the following responsibilities:

Managing individual engineers

The Engineering Managers support the professional development, performance and career progression of their direct reports through coaching and mentoring, and by helping them to decide & set goals and agree actionable steps towards achieving them. They encourage their reports to actively learn at work, and support that learning by proactively collecting feedback and providing it regularly & promptly.

The Engineering Manager is responsible for encouraging a healthy work/life balance and supporting their direct reports' happiness and wellbeing at work. They provide pastoral care to their reports by listening to their personal needs & concerns and addressing them where possible.

Supporting the Technology Team

The Engineering Managers are responsible for developing & evolving the necessary structures to support everyone in the Technology Team; running and refining the Technology Team hiring and onboarding processes, salary and performance reviews, succession planning, and ensuring line management is fair and consistent across the team.

They will coordinate and facilitate discussions about team changes and are responsible for balancing skills and experience across the teams. They will encourage an inclusive culture of learning and knowledge sharing by organising & attending internal events and identifying opportunities for collaboration.

APPLICATIONS

Please use our online form by pressing 'Apply for this job' below, including your CV and a cover letter telling us why you'd like to come work with us.

Engineering Manager interview process

We do an initial competency interview which consists of some screening questions, like checking your right to work in the UK (unfortunately we can’t sponsor visas), and your experience in our hiring competencies.

This first interview has two purposes: it's a chance for you to ask questions about how we work, and for us to find out what you're looking for from your next role.

We'll also be interested to find out more about your management skills, leadership skills, emotional intelligence, decisiveness, analytical & forward thinking and resilience & adaptability. So we'll be interested to talk about things like: your approach to dealing with difficult situations like dealing with conflict or challenging conversations, how you manage your reports and how you learn new things and teach others.

The final stage consists of a half-day interview, where you’ll do several interviews with members on our team. We’ll share more and prepare you with information about each session beforehand.

How we assess candidates

We use a set of competencies to evaluate candidates throughout the interview process: emotional intelligence, management skills, leadership skills, resilience & adaptability, storytelling, decisiveness and analytical & forward thinking.

RECRUITMENT PROCESS

Please contact [email protected] if you require any reasonable adjustments or alterations to be made, to support you through the recruitment process.

This role will provide access to Government assets, so successful candidates must complete a basic personnel security standard check, and the following additional checks:

Credit Check

Sanctions Check

UK Directorship (for director roles only)

Please contact [email protected] for further details about these background checks.

DIVERSITY STATEMENTWe value all the great benefits that diversity brings and encourage everyone to bring their whole self at work, regardless of gender, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age or disability.
