Position Summary

Exercises independent discretion or judgment in handling all types of catastrophe property claims. Also assists assigned field office when not on catastrophe deployment in handling day to day property claims.Join ERIE Insurance as a Catastrophe Property Adjuster and make a meaningful impact helping customers rebuild after major events. This role combines the flexibility of working from home with the opportunity to travel throughout our operating footprint to support policyholders when they need it most.

We’re accepting applicants from across the ERIE Insurance operating footprint: Pennsylvania (PA), New York (NY), Maryland/Washington, DC (MD/DC), North Carolina (NC), Virginia (VA), West Virginia (WV), Tennessee (TN), Wisconsin (WI), Illinois (IL), Indiana (IN), Ohio (OH), and Kentucky (KY).
Travel Required: The majority of responsibilities involve travel to catastrophe sites and field inspections across our footprint. Unlike national carriers, ERIE’s regional footprint means shorter travel times to events — so you can focus on helping customers, not endless commutes.

What You’ll Do:

  • Investigate, evaluate, and resolve property claims resulting from catastrophes, natural disasters, and large-scale events.
  • Conduct on-site inspections, estimate damages, and prepare detailed reports.
  • Provide clear, empathetic communication to policyholders throughout the claims process.
  • Partner with claims teams and external resources to deliver fair and timely resolutions.
  • Represent ERIE Insurance with professionalism and compassion in the field.


What Makes You Stand Out:

  • Previous experience as a Property Claims Adjuster, Catastrophe Adjuster, or Field Adjuster.
  • Proven ability to work independently while traveling extensively, often on short notice.
  • Strong communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills.
  • A customer-first mindset with a passion for helping people recover after loss.Valid driver’s license (required).

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Establishes immediate contact with Policyholders regarding their loss, driving to site of damage within assigned territory or other if required.
  • Sets and manages adequate reserves within designated authority.
  • Properly identifies and assesses damage. Determines liability and total value of claim.
  • Prepares a proper estimate relating to the identified damages and obtains an agreed scope of work and cost of repair with contractor and/or Policyholder.
  • Properly documents claim files with all activities and submits final report to file for closure.
  • Determines or declines payment and issues checks as required. Negotiates claims with plaintiff attorneys when necessary.
  • Assigns and supervises the handling of property losses by independent adjusters when necessary. Advises claims adjusters regarding handling of claims.
  • Attends industry-related training programs to stay current on legal developments and ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations impacting the operation of the department.
  • Assists assigned field office(s) as necessary when not on Catastrophe Duty; brings assigned property claims to conclusion.
  • Provides monthly operational maintenance of the Sprinter Van attached to the office where the CAT adjuster is domiciled.

Qualifications

Minimum Educational Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

Additional Experience

  • Five years of claims handling experience, or equivalent, including two years of property claims handling experience, required.
  • Strong technical knowledge of structural damage repair and valuation techniques or equivalent required.
  • Proficiency with estimating software (preferably Symbility) or equivalent, preferred.Incumbent must live in the territory assigned unless a change is approved by the company.
  • Position requires the incumbent to serve on the Catastrophe Team as a first responder which will include frequent travel on short notice to other locations for periods in excess of two consecutive weeks.

Designations and/or Licenses

  • Successful completion of Associate in Claims (AIC) program preferred.
  • Appropriate license as required by state.
  • Valid driver’s license and good driving record required.
