DCARA, the Deaf Counseling, Advocacy & Referral Agency, is a nonprofit organization established in 1962 as one of the first Deaf-run agencies in the country. Headquartered in San Leandro, California, DCARA serves the Deaf, DeafBlind, Hard of Hearing, and Late-Deafened communities across 14 counties in Northwestern California and the Bay Area, including Alameda, Contra Costa, Napa, San Francisco, Del Norte, San Mateo, Humboldt, Solano, Mendocino, Lake, Marin, Santa Cruz, Santa Clara, and Sonoma.
DCARA provides a comprehensive range of services that empower Deaf people to live independent and productive lives with full access to the rights, privileges, and opportunities available to the general public. These services include communication access assistance, independent living skills, employment services, peer counseling, information referral, advocacy services, and community education. The agency's Youth & Family Services Department works with families to create and bolster family language, family communication, and family bond through programs such as Family Mentoring, Youth Mentoring, Family ASL classes, and advocacy support for IEP/ITP meetings.
