Job Description

Toast is driven by building the all-in-one restaurant platform that helps restaurants operate their business, increase sales, engage guests, and keep employees happy.

 

We are hiring an experienced Counsel to join our Legal team. As Counsel, Product and Marketing, you will work with multiple teams across the business including the product, engineering, marketing, compliance, and sales teams. You will develop a deep understanding of Toast’s products, strategies, and processes to offer pragmatic legal advice and help the business identify and mitigate potential legal risks.

 

About this role* (Responsibilities)

  • Working alongside and advising a variety of stakeholders across the product, engineering, and marketing teams throughout the product development lifecycle (i.e. from the initial stages of product development through launch, including the review of marketing strategies and assets). 
  • Acting as the primary legal point of contact for the Toast Marketing team. 
  • Reviewing advertising and marketing collateral and advising the business regarding claim substantiation, consumer disclosures, and related issues.
  • Advising product managers and engineers with respect to product development,  including advising on a broad range of issues including regulatory compliance, consumer protection, intellectual property, hardware, and privacy, and providing practical advice to business stakeholders. 
  • Understanding and staying up to date on U.S. and international laws and regulations relating to the Toast platform, products, services, and Toast’s marketing activities.
  • Thinking creatively to navigate complex regulatory environments to ensure a smooth and compliant user experience.  
  • Helping build scalable and effective processes for providing legal input to business partners including the marketing team. 
  • Partnering collaboratively across multiple functions, exhibiting a deep understanding of how Toast products work and how their evolution is influenced by applicable laws and regulations. 



 Do you have the right ingredients*? (Requirements)

 

  • A J.D. from an ABA-accredited U.S. law school, and membership in good standing to at least one state bar.
  • 5-9 years of legal experience, in areas covering regulatory compliance, privacy, intellectual property, marketing/advertising, and consumer protection. 
  • Experience directly advising product and engineering teams on issues related to the development of new products, product enhancements, and feature requests; 
  • Experience directly advising marketing teams concerning advertising and marketing collateral;
  • Experience with marketing and product-related laws and regulations.
  • Experience working with fast-paced technology, software, or fintech companies. 
  • A solution-oriented, customer service, and growth mindset.
  • Exceptional communication skills and the ability to explain complex ideas in a succinct and impactful manner to a non-legal audience.
  • The ability to integrate into cross-functional teams with a cooperative and participatory approach.

The base salary range for this role is listed below. The starting salary will be determined based on skills and experience. In addition to base salary, our total rewards components include cash compensation (overtime, bonus/commissions if eligible), equity, and benefits.
Pay Range
$131,000—$210,000 USD
