About the job

This position is needed to lead a new team to enable Twilio to better support our global customers using Video and Voice in their solutions. As the local Engineer Manager for this team you will coordinate with Product Management and the other globally-distributed engineering groups supporting Video and Voice to set the priorities and assign tasks to the team members using Agile methods. You will help set the standards for the team in terms of process and ensuring the team is developing a reliable, highly scalable solution for Twilio customers.

Responsibilities

In this role, you’ll:

  • We are seeking a leader who has solved complex problems and has the aptitude to navigate uncharted waters.
  • Own, operate and maintain your team’s services. Employ Agile methodologies to continuously deliver value to customers. Institute and maintain world-class on-call incident response processes for the team.
  • Institute development best practices to ensure the team produces high quality, well-architected and supportable code. Stay up-to-date with industry developments and challenge the team to adopt leading modern technologies, approaches, and best practices.
  • Embrace the challenge of scaling a complex distributed platform with points of presence globally, each one concerned with high availability, high reliability, high throughput, low latency, and media fidelity
  • Be comfortable expressing thoughts and ideas as detailed prose and use it as an effective means to collaborate with leads, architects and cross functional teams
  • Manage employee career development by providing coaching and mentoring to junior engineers while guiding senior contributors to maximize their potential. Write performance evaluations, collaborate with employees on their objectives and provide a clear path for progression through personal development plans.
  • Own, operate and maintain your team's products. Employ Agile methodologies to continuously delivervalue to customers.
  • Collaborate on roadmaps with Product Managers and Tech Leads to ensure the team has clear direction and priorities. Ensure there is cross-training and a healthy balance between features and technical debt.
  • Act as an ambassador for Twilio, recruiting and motivating top talent.

Required:

  • Minimum 7 years of hands-on experience along with demonstrated leadership (manager or tech lead) in a large scale, distributed applications environment on JVM based technologies
  • Hands on experience scaling production backend systems, with the proven ability to design and develop horizontally-scalable, resilient and performing-under-load systems
  • Experience scaling data tiers employing a variety of SQL/NoSQL database and caching technologies
  • Hands on experience with cloud technologies such as AWS, GCP, OpenStack or Azure
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related engineering field
  • Strong Computer Science fundamentals not limited to data structures, algorithms, operating systems, and distributed systems
  • Able to work well in leading and motivating a team
  • Experience working with SCRUM teams and Agile principles while embracing uncertainty, continuous improvement and predictable delivery

Desired:

  • Previous Engineering Management experience
  • Experience with kubernetes based services
  • Knowledge and experience working with the webRTC protocol
  • Knowledge and experience working with SIP protocol

Location

This role will be based in our Tallinn, Estonia office, or remote in Estonia.

Travel

We prioritize connection and opportunities to build relationships with our customers and each other. For this role, you may be required to travel occasionally to participate in project or team in-person meetings.
