Cell Press is launching Newton, a prestigious new journal to serve physics researchers. The journal will sit alongside our top-tier Cell Press physical science journals (including Chem, Joule, Matter and Device). About the Role

We are recruiting a scientific editor to be part of this exciting new journal. They will have the unique opportunity to help shape a prominent and vibrant journal, championing their communities.

The roles will report to the Editor in Chief and will contribute to establish the new journal as a sought-after venue to publish the most impactful research. They will handle submitted manuscripts, handling the peer review and all stages of the editorial process up to acceptance, as well as commission and write content.

We are looking for scientists with a PhD in physics. Desirable expertise includes condensed matter, quantum information, optics and photonics, biophysics. Previous editorial experience is not essential.

This is a full-time role for US candidates that will be based in Cambridge MA, with some flexibility on location within the US. We are also hiring one editor in China (see job R73219) and one in either the UK or The Netherlands (R73223).

Responsibilities

  • Assessing submitted research papers and handling the peer review process up to acceptance.
  • Commissioning and editing review article and other types of content; writing editorials.
  • Traveling extensively to attend conferences and visit research institutions.
  • Understanding of the needs of the international research community of authors, readers, and reviewers that journal serves.
  • Building effective working relationships with colleagues across Cell Press and contribute to the overall success of Cell Press in the physical sciences.

Requirements

  • Have a PhD in physics, ideally with a focus on condensed matter, quantum information, optics and photonics, biophysics. Post-doc experience is welcome but not required.
  • Be a critical thinker and be willing to learn and engage with diverse areas within physics.
  • Have excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Have great teamworking skills and a collaborative mindset suited to work in a diverse global team.
  • Have an interest in publishing trends and scientific communication.
  • Have proven organizational and time management skills, and an ability to work independently.
